National Drinking Age

It seems to be a topic for the back to college time.  Should the drinking age be returned to 18 and the Feds not allowed to tie it to moneys?  Or do you think 21 is the right age because they are not mature enough at 18?  Would lowering the age really stop the binge drinking?  I know way back when I was 18 and it was legal, it didn't change the poor choices of some.

here's a question:

Did Davis Ruark's being WELL ABOVE 21 stop him from blowing a .13?

Or how about Jason Bukovsky, who blew a -- get this .39 one hour after killing a woman on Aviation Blvd in Glen Burnie, for which he will serve a max of 13 months, five years of probation, and a little community service time.

The problem is that we have made alcohol consumption a "rite of passage" instead of an "adult privilege". Instead of welcoming 18 year-olds into the full flower of adulthood, and "mentoring" them how to drink responsibly, we force it into the dark shadows where no one is watching... and if someone is, they are liable if they don't do something about it.

My hubby thinks it would be fine to change the drinking age to 18. He said at 18 you are an adult and fair is fair. I said fine, then they should change the legal adult age to 21.

The problem is, that will NOT stop teens from drinking. Not one damn bit.

Either keep the legal drinking age to 21, or change the age for military enlistment and legal age for marriage to 21. If your can marry or fight for your country at 18, then you should be able to purchase alcohol. However, I agree with GP, we need to teach responsibility, by example first.

I would agree that there are irresponsible drinkers above and below the age of 21. The best we can do is teach and preach responsible drinking to our teens and hope for the best.

GP it probably won't stop them.
BUT
That is because there is no real punishment for breaking the law.

I bet them kids would be a mite more careful if the offense carried a MANDATORY 30 days in the klink *, and a $1000.00 fine.

* No home detention, no "work/school release", and no "good time", I mean 30 days and nights straight.

PS
Any 18, 19, or 20 year old with an active duty Military ID should be exempt and allowed to drink, because if he messes up while drinking, his CO will see to it that he walks the straight and narrow until he IS 21.

The legal age of an adult is 18 yoa. Period. If you can enlist in the military and fight and die for your country you should be able to consume alcohol. People who are 18 yoa and want to drink will still drink regardless of the law. Also.....it should be the decision of each individual State to make and enforce their own laws without being punished by the Federal Govt. who will withold funds. Interestingly enough - if the feds didn't tax so friggin heavily, there wouldn't be anything to withold from the States.
